PROPOSED RESOLUTION
TO SUPPORT THE ASEAN’S AND UNITED NATION’S CALL FOR MYANMAR TO RESPECT HUMAN RIGHTS, FREE AUNG SAN SUU KYI AND ALL POLITICAL DETAINEES, AND MOVE TOWARDS DEMOCRACY
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the city government to promote democracy, respect for human rights, and foster international friendship and cooperation;
WHEREAS, recent events in Myanmar, one of the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has caught the attention of the world as its people led by Buddhist monks protested against the unjust polices of its military regime;
WHEREAS, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers immediately convened at the United Nations in New York to express its grave concern over the situation and urged Myanmar to desist from the use of violence and exercise utmost restraint in dealing with protests, resume its national reconciliation, release all its political detainees including Aung San Suu Kyi and work towards a peaceful transition to democracy;
WHEREAS, the ASEAN likewise fully supports the efforts of the UN in sending a special envoy to deal with the crisis in
WHEREAS, there is a need to express our solidarity with the people of
WHEREFORE, premises considered, be it resolved, as it is hereby resolved, to support the ASEAN’s and United Nation’s call for Myanmar to respect human rights, free Aung San Suu Kyi and all political detainees, and move towards democracy;
RESOLVED further that copies of the Resolution be furnished the City Mayor, the Embassy of Myanmar in Manila, the ASEAN Secretariat, the UN Information Office in Manila, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Initiatives for International Dialogue, and all others interested for their information and support.
